Focus Your Genius
Self-Improvement for Creative Thinkers

Getting psyched for free teleclass;
Renaissance Mind survey this month, and more to come!

I am finally finishing up the details of one of my many projects. Yippee! If you are ready to GIVE YOURSELF A $10,000/yr RAISE, check out the teleclass announcement below!

Also, I would love to get more interaction going with the amazing, wonderful, and highly diverse group of Renaissance Minds who are reading this newsletter. (And thank you for sending me such caring and thoughtful feedback - Look over there -->)

So several times a year, or every newsletter, or once in a blue moon, or whatever tickles my fancy, I will be sending surveys out to you! (All feedback is completely anonymous through the service that I use.) I will have some quick check-box type, but I'll also be sending out some longer, free-form type questionnaires so you can really help me best serve YOU and what your biggest struggles may be as a Renaissance Mind.

The current survey I'm sending out ties in to both the current economic conditions, but also think beyond and before what's going on, too. Were you able to manage money well, BEFORE "crisis" struck? Or did you struggle to balance your checkbook, even when times were booming? One of the biggest struggles with creative but scattered Renaissance Minds is FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Especially around self-value. I am re-reading Barbara Stanny's "Overcoming Underearning," and it triggered some great questions I'd like to ask you;

Renaissance Minds and Money Management

Participation is encouraged and very appreciated! Note that it is a 2-page survey - you have to click the tiny "next" button at the bottom to get to page 2.

As for today's newsletter, it is indeed a long-awaited continuation of the May newsletter, where I wrote about how to start to overcome overwhelm. (Read Overcoming Overwhelm - Take One Step Away From the Edge here!) While writing, I realized that this is ACTUALLY not a 2-part, but a 3-part series! ;) Now, I've learned the folly of making promises to WHEN I'll send the information, but this I promise you - you'll be receiving the third and final part of this series sometime later this year! Or maybe, next...! (How I crack myself up!)

How to Focus Your Genius

Overcoming Overwhelm - "Containerizing" Your To-Do's

In part 1 of this article, Overcoming Overwhelm - Take One Step Away From the Edge, I explained that the first step of digging out of complete overwhelm is to make a massive mind-dump of all of your unfinished tasks, projects, to-do's, and so forth, aka "Open Loops." Hope you did it, and more importantly, hope you can still FIND it, because now we're going to take that Open Loop mind dump one step farther.

You will need the Open Loops page you already created (or go ahead and make an up-to-date version!), plus 2 blank sheets of paper. On the top of one sheet, write "TASKS." On the top of the other, write "PROJECTS."

Here I want to pause, stand beside you, and say DO NOT underestimate the importance of this step. At this point, this giant "to-do" list of vague, undefined actions has been weighing you down. Especially if it was only kept in your head until now! It's an extremely heavy, draining, overwhelming feeling to have so many unidentified tasks on your plate that are just spinning around your head. This one small step has brought GIGANTIC breakthroughs for many of my clients. KK, now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Go down your mind-dump list. BRIEFLY evaluate each item on the list and guesstimate how much time it will take to complete. (It does not have to be broken down into its smallest component or step at this point.) If the time to complete is over an hour, it goes on the "Project" list. If it will take under an hour to complete, it goes on the task list. That's it.

No purging, no decisions, no doing it. Just identifying where it belongs and logging it onto its new list.

However, if the item's new home is on the TASK list, you do have one more step. Guesstimate - again, just a ballpark number will do, you're not being graded here - the total minutes it will take you to complete the task, and WRITE IT in parentheses next to the task. Ok, I will allow ONE exception to the "no doing it" clause above - if it's going on the task list AND it will take under 5 minutes to do, and you're feeling inspired, go to it. (Then you can still write it on the task list, and cross it off for your free "runner's high," that endorphin rush you get whenever you complete a task on your list!)

I find that trying to estimate a project, something OVER an hour, can be quite unrealistic, so I usually don't bother until I'm breaking the project down into doable STEPS - at which point, I estimate how long the individual steps are going to take.

So now your MIND DUMP OF UNFINISHED TO-DO's is no longer swirling around in that creative little head of yours. Now it's down on paper, sorted into two different categories (Projects vs. Tasks) AND furthermore, labeled as to how long it's estimated to take to complete. My guess is that, even though you have taken little to no action to DO any of these items, just going through this process brings you a sense of great relief. In addition to a little bit of validation - Geeeeeez, you probably have 18 projects and 64 and-a-half hours of tasks on your list - no WONDER you don't seem to be getting anything done!

Still one more step to go to finalize the "Overcoming Overwhelm" series, coming (at some point) to an in-box near you.

BTW-
I got the idea of "containerizing" time from that amazing time & clutter management expert Julie Morgenstern, who describes it beautifully in her fantastic book, "Time Management From the Inside Out." She explains that her own time management breakthrough came when she realized that organizing time is the same thing as organizing space. Basically, we have to fit a certain number of tasks into our daily agenda, just as if we were fitting a certain number of items into a specific space. See Chapter One of "Time Management From the Inside Out" for her wonderful explanation.

TBR (To Be Read)

Keeping aligned with my survey, I highly recommend Barbara Stanny's book "Overcoming Underearning: A 5-Step Plan to a Richer Life." It helped me a lot along my own financial path, and if you do all the exercises it truly is a life-changing financial management tool.

Also a shout-out to Julie Morgenstern's "Time Management From the Inside Out" for her wonderful help with containerizing our tasks!

... This year I then decided to focus on one (business) until I have finished it.
If one stays focused to the one you actually achieve it quicker.

thanks Tammy,
you having the drive to share your story is really helpful to me at the moment - i'm still using your strategies for getting something done rather than just flapping about! so don't be down on yourself for taking time about the newsletter, it's like when a friend gets in touch after a long break, you're not angry they've taken so long, just happy to hear from them!
;-)

...Your sharing of your journey is helping me (as I know others too) and I am finding courage in my conviction to finish what I started.

Congratulations on getting your newsletter out!
Very interesting concept. You are right... I also try to focus my attention on too many goals at the same time and it does get overwhelming. I really do need to decide on what is going to be my #1 priority...
Thanks for the newsletter.
Lise

Hi Tammy,
I always enjoy reading your newsletters. It makes me feel better to know that I'm not alone in my craziness. Keep up the good work!!
Sorry to hear of your personal tragedies. I say a prayer of peace and happiness for you.

Hey Tammy,
Nice update letter and I hope you are going to be extremely successful on all 3 ventures(and everything else in your life!)... Have a great weekend!
Bob

Tammy,
I look forward to reading your newsletters, whenever you send them. They are informative and humorous. Good luck with your new love interest, I have been in your shoes not once but twice. My first marriage lasted 13 years and I have three beautiful children from it. It took me 7 years to get over my divorce. It is truly a process. Take your time, make yourself happy first and foremost. If you are not happy, no one else will be... I just wanted you to know there are others out there that have suffered similar life issues like you and we are stronger for it!
Enjoy life, you only get one chance.
Mary Ellen

Love your transparency, Tammy!!
